Acer Aspire 8942G Review: Price-Specs
Hi-def, high-end gaming and task-crunching PC at a tasty price…
Acer makes some of the best value notebooks around, and the Aspire 8942G really highlights that. It impresses with its features, power and performance but costs significantly less than some of its more illustrious test rivals.
As with the other machines here t
he Intel Core i7 processor lays waste to most tasks, with its hyper-threading and auto clocking capabilities. Multiple applications run smoothly and quickly, helped by 6GB of memory as standard.
A very powerful ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card gives this machine the sort of power normally associated with rings from the likes of Alienware, letting you get you game on in no uncertain terms.
The Acer provides the widest choice of connection with five USBs bolstered by HDMI, eSATA, Firewire, DisplayPort and more. A read-only Blu-ray drive is present and BD films look very impressive on the Acer’s enormous, full-HD screen, it doesn’t quite reach the same standard as the Sony, but it’s the second best panel here. The 640GB hard drive is the largest on test.
The size of the screen ensures a massive chassis, and also a large, comfortable keyboard. A dedicated numeric pad is included and there’s also a touch-activated media controls centre for changing tracks and pumping up the volume.
Despite this 4.6kg bulk, there’s only room for a 180-minute battery. that spells out one thing pretty clearly: this is a desktop replacement. If you’re not planning on taking this out of the house much, it’s a great mix of power, comfortable and affordability, though.
