ASUS Eee PC 1005PE
Another solid entry into the Eee PC catalogue, although little new is on offer…
Asus released its first Eee PC in 2007 and almost single-handedly kickstarted the modern netbook market, steadily improving on the original design with each iteration. The Eee PC 1005PE is one of the latest models in the range and. while build quality has not dipped, the limitations of the compact and low-cost concept of netbooks mean there’s few original features on offer.
At first glance, this machine is similar in design to other recent Eee PCs. The same smooth, glossy design of previous models in Asus’ Eee PC Seashell range has been used for the chassis and it proves stylish, reliably firm around the lid and palmrests and slim enough to fit into a school bag or case with ease. At 1.3kg it’s not the lightest in this group. but comes close.
Dust magnet
The interior is similar to the MSI in this group, with a glossy surface that quickly attracts dust, a mottled touchpad and an isolation style (or ‘Chiclet. as Asus calls it) keyboard. This is a departure from earlier Eee PC models, with each key protruding through an individual hole in the chassis. The covered gaps between keys help to separate them, without leaving space for crumbs to infiltrate the notebook’s interior. The typing action is firm, despite a little flex in the center of the board.
The slim and light chassis is perfectly portable and backed up by 419 minutes of battery life. This is more than enough for working all day away from the mains. but is bettered by the Dell and MSI in this group. Asus normally excels in this area, but the Dell and MSI do have oversized batteries which explain the difference.
Unlike all the other netbooks here, a matt-TFT finish has been employed on the 10.1-inch screen, eliminating reflections and allowing comfortable visibility outdoors. The drawback is that images are slightly muted and dull when compared to the other more vibrant displays in this group. The screen is also not as bright. However, if you or your child love working outside, this is the netbook to go for.
As with all machines in this group test, performance is basic and suitable only for simple tasks. All four netbooks here are also limited by their use of integrated GPUs, which can handle only the most basic games, with multimedia use restricted to viewing photos, watching video and simple photo editing. Other features are near identical to the other netbooks here, although Asus has also included a quick-boot option.
Asus has stuck to its tried-and-tested blueprint with the Eee PC 1005PE. The result is a solidly built netbook that is great to use and perfect for working outdoors, making it a great choice for anyone buying their child’s first netbook.
