Canon PowerShot S90: Offers Superb Result and Great Versatility
Wednesday, July 21 2010
Canon’s digital powerhouse pairs a decent 3.8x optical, 28-105mm lens with advanced features that are more comparable to a DSLR than usual compact effort. In fact the sheer variety of features is dazzling.
As well as full manual modes accessed via the stiff, top-mounted dail, there’s flash compensation, RAW mode and a histogram
The “ring” function lets you quickly adjust camera settings via what would normally be the focus ring; choose from ISO, exposure, white balance, zoom and focus, then twist away to quickly change them. There’s also a Smart Auto mode and 22 scene modes.
Starting around 1.5 seconds, than S90 is quickly brisk when focusing. The three-inch TFT LCD screen is sharp, detailed and easy to see in bright sunlight. Although like the Nikon later in the test, it is prone to smears.
Most crucially, the S90 takes excellent pictures. They’re sharp, detailed and boast vivid colors at wide and telephoto position, while macro shots from 5cm are stunningly crisp and easily the best on test.
The S90 looks slightly dull and utilitarian and it’s undeniably priced as a premium, but some may appreciate its minimalism and many won’t mind paying extra to get such a high-quality camera. Its only major shortcoming is the lack of an HD video mode – a meagre 640×480 is poor at this price, even though Canon has seen fit ti include an HDMI port.
The S90 is not for novices, It’s a powerful camera for those who are serious about photography, but want the advantages a compact offers. It’s expensive, sure, but on balance it’s worth the outlay.
