Dell’s tablet-cum-smartphone is double top…..
Dell’s new streak is a Google Android device that combines the functionality of a smartphone and a tablet PC with bit of digital camera and satnav thrown in for good measure. That many make it sound like a bit of a curate’s egg, but in a sleek. Sexy package that’s thinner than many current smarthones, it’s a viable alternative to both the iPhone and iPad. How’s that for a double whammy?
Dell is adamant the streak is a tablet, but with its five-inch display we’d say it’s more like a big smarthone. Certainly in true smartphone fashion the battery will last about a day before needing a recharge. It will fit in many pockets and you can make calls on it quality excellent. Should you prefer to speak into something a little smaller and keep this for web-browsing and emailing. The streak is also available on a data -only plan.
The scratch-resistant, 480×800 LCD display is a beauty. bright and vibrant. It’s spacious enough to nest all your widget and apps
and still leave room for photos. the capacitive multi-touch isn’t as fluid as what Apple serves up, but it’s still very responsive and accurate when web-surfing, using apps and scrolling through home screens.
The Streak runs on Android 1.6; an update to 2.2 is promised this year. This mean limited use of the voice-to-text functionality and lo live wallpaper as per the Google Nexus One. However, Dell has applied as skin to 1.6 that’s intuitive,logical and snappy- helpen along in no small measure by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor-making the streak a real pleasure to use. It also support multi-tasking.
Handy little shortcuts take you where you need to be quickly, with tabs allowing access to all of your home screen with one touch, as well as your most-used apps and connectivity options.
Bespoke widget sit on your home pages, including facebook and twitter ones the other live feed and status updates. Although it doesn’t sync the account, when uyou update facebook via the widget, it ask if you ‘d like send to twitter too, and vice versa.
push webmail is also very simple to set up and work well, even though the app for it is almost illegally dull in appearance. Problems an arise when emailing and texting as finding a natural typing grip is problematic – we settled on a two-handed., landscape approach eventually. The virtual keyboard is fine, but it’s not as fine as an HTC HEro. iPad or iPhone, all of which have better correction/suggestion functionality.
Browsing is a pleasant experience in spite of the lack of flash. Working through pages in portrait ode is the preferred grip here,especially on blogs and site such as twitter. the pinch-to-zoom multi-touch work well, while pages and images render quickly thanks to the 1GHz processsor. The WebKit browser is generally very good. However, firefox would have been available as an option if this ran android 2.1 and with Apple out of the game. Dell has missed on open goal by leaving flash off the streak.
