Epson Stylus SX445W Wireless All-In-One Printer Review

You can also hook up your smartphone or tablet using Epson IPrint. But the SX445W isn’t stuffed with endless features; instead, it focuses on the facilities that most improve the user experience. And it offers these at a very modest price, even if there are a few hitches that threaten to derail the Epson,

As a member of Epsonrs new Small-in-one range, the SX445W is said to be 39 percent smaller than previous models, its curves are nicely done – even, dare we say itr cute. And its compact footprint means you won’t need to surrender a large part of your desk.

The control panel is a mixture of old and new. The garish orange icons aren’t attractive and, while the buttons are touch-sensitive, they’re used only to move up and down text menus. Vet the Epson is easy to use.

The system is logical, clear and reasonably detailed. Back and Home buttons are always present, should you want to retrace your steps or return to the main menu.

Print quality is a mixed bag. The obligatory super-fast mode hits a strong figure of 15.8 pages per minute (ppm), but the text is so light that it’s almost unusable. The middle-quality mode offers much darker output at a solid rate of 5.7ppm,. although the characters aren’t as crisp as we’d like and letters lack clarity, despite using setup options to fine-tune the ink.

Graphics printing is much better. Ignore the ultra-faint 5.9ppm fast mode, and instead go for the middle 1.8ppm option. While the speed isn’t competitive, the print quality is good even when using standard paper stock. The palette is dark, but we like its intensity.

The scanner has a rather flimsy lid, and there isn’t as much lift as we’d like. Nonetheless, results were generally accurate, and colours were captured with some fidelity.

The Epson’s running costs aren’t small, A page of text will set you back around 3,2pr while a page of colour costs 8p.. The latter is typical for Epson, but some Canons, for example, can reduce this outlay to less than 7p per page. Despite a tow asking price, the Epson will thus cost you slightly more in the long term.

Verdict

The compact SX445W looks good and has useful features. Should you want a modestly priced printer primarily for graphics, it will prove a decent choice. Text is disappointing, though, running costs above average, and the Stylus SX445W lacks speed.
