HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf
HP’s LaserJet Pro M1536dnf is a multifunction mono laser printer with a built-in fax, scanner, copier and 35-sheet auto document feeder.
The LaserJet’s large input tray and high-capacity toner cartridges mean it doesn’t require constant refilling. It has a low recommended monthly page volume, but unless you’re running a paper-heavy medium-sized business this shouldn’t be a concern.
At £216, it’s slightly more expensive than many monochrome printers, but it has all the features most businesses would need, with automatic document scanning, copying and faxing. Ethernet and USB 2.0 are also offered.
The 250-sheet capacity impressed us, although the output tray can handle only 100 sheets before problems occur. The HP is rated as capable of up to 8,000 pages per month, with a recommended volume of 500 to 2,000 pages. Similarly priced printers can handle 15,000.
It produces impressively clean text and displays good gradation on graphics. We’d happily use this printer for long-term archival – all our test prints were consistently clear and easy to read, even with 6pt text. We wouldn’t use it for photos, but for graphics and text it’s acceptable.
Using Normal settings we saw print speeds of 24 pages per minute (ppm) during runs of more than 50 pages. The HP generally took less than 10 seconds to print the first page.
The M1536dnf’s flatbed scanner offers a 600x600dpi resolution, interpolating to 1200x1200dpi for colour text and graphics. It isn’t able to capture the same detail levels as some high-end models, but for digitising documents and presentations it’s acceptable.
A 35-sheet automatic document feeder makes it easy to scan in multi-page documents.
HP maintains a number of environmental initiatives, including the recycling of empty ink cartridges. The company’s environmental policy aims to minimise its products’ energy consumption to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with yearly goals and updated progress reports.
Verdict
The HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf is a well-rounded multifunction monochrome laser printer. Its initial price may be slightly high, but it has advantages when it comes to low maintenance requirements and features.
