IPhone 4

Monday, July 12 2010

It seems a long time since that Iphone 4 was “found” in a Californian bar. it’s testament to

  • How poor those photo leacked were
  • How good the Iphone 4 that it still impresses even though we already knew most of the improvements.

It beats the 3GS in every area.

First off. It trumps it on speed – what the “S” in 3GS stood for. Under the bonnet is the same A4 processor as the IPad, meaning faster, slicker operation. The Wi-Fi is now 802.11n, which should give hugely improved speed and range. Maximum HSDPA Download speed remains the same at 7.2Mbps but there’s support for 5.8Mbps HSUPA for faster upload from your handset.

The Iphone 4 also look stunning. A metal band borders the glass font back, and it’s 24% slimmer than 3GS. Fire it up and the “Retina Display” screen absolutely leaps out at you, with four times as many pixels as the 3GS and a contrast ratio of 800:1. The 326 pixels per inch make it, technically speaking, higher resolution than the images on this page.

The camera’s been given a major overhaul and can now record 720p HD video at 30fs. Add the new iMovie appĀ  and the iPhone 4 is now handheld video editing suite – that doesn’t sound like good for pocket comanders such as the Mino and Vado. The stills have also been boosted with a five megapixel sensors instead of the 3 GS’s there, and the addition of an LED flash. More curiously, a front-facing camera has also been added, as iPhone belatedly gets on the practical motionless bandwagon that is video calling.

Apple also claims improved battery life. 3G talk time goes up from five to seven hours, plus battery bumps for browsing audio and video. About the only thing that hasn’t improved is storage. The new handset comes in 32GB and 16GB model. In turn, the 3GS become the 8GB only budget model. The iPhone 3G is discontinued.
