Nokia C3 Review: New Phone for Old People

Budget, non-3G Symbian phone offers old-fashioned virtues…

Nokia C3

This stylish and smart new phone from Nokia is designed for those on tighter budgets. but you wouldn’t guess to look at it.

The screen is clear, the fonts are big, sharp and at the QWERTY keyboard is easy to use and the direction pad and other buttons also work reliably. If you’re an accurate typist – ie: you don’t have to rely on autochecking, which is absent here – you’ll fly through message composition.

The Ovi Store offers a reasonable number of apps, though it can’t remotely compete with the Android Market or Apple AppStore. Not all apps will work with the C3 – no ovi Maps for instance, as there’s no GPS.

A Communities box on the home screen is good for searching Faccbook and Twitter updates, limited only by the screen size and its ability to refresh.

Performance feels sluggish, partly because there’s no 3G connectivity. This means you won’t be able to surf the internet at speed,or quickly download files unless you’re in a wireless-enabled area. The Wi-Fi is efficient and simple to set up, though you have to trawl through menus to switch it on.

The two-mcgapixel camera with no flash offers images that are okay for picture messaging but not much more. At least there’s a dedicated 3.5min headphone jack.

The Symbian Series 40 OS wheezes along but does at least have the virtue of familiarity. In fact, that’s pretty much this phone’s defining characteristic. its very cheap yet offers solid build, and has familiar systems, decent battery life and no power-sapping fripperies such as 3G and GPS. It’s a phone for old people, in other words.
