Palm Pre Plus
Beefed-up Pre could still be challenger, given more app…
Ah, the Palm Pre…It coulda been a contender. Palm’s webOS was a delight but something about the Pre failed to capture the public imagination.
The Pre Plus doesn’t really improve on things enough to catapult itself to the top, but it remains a fine handset. The scrollball under the screen is now gone, leaving a more intuitive touch-sensitive area to swipe between screens, the storage has doubled to 16GB and there’s also more
RAM,making it quicker than the first Pre.
The 3.1-inch screen strikes a good balance between being large enough for browsing and small enough to be portable. It’s also a reasonably good performer in bright light.
Beneath the screen lurks a mediocre but usable, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. More space between its keys would be a boon, but at least it’s there as an option for those of you who don’t like touchscreen keyboards.
Palm’s webOS is terrific definitely the slickest here apart from Apple’s iOS 4, it’s better-looking than Android and highly intuitive. Flicking apps on and off screen like playing cards is effective as well as fun. The iPhones 3GS and iPhone 4 may boast multi-tasking now, but the Pre has had it since day one.
Palm’s App Catalog is growing but not last enough. with fewer than 2.000 apps available. Still, it does include games from big names such as EA and Gaineloft.
As with the BlackBerry, the camera here has 4.2 megapixels and an LED flash. It’s reasonably quick off the mark and gives passable results. Music playback is good and as easy as the rest of the phone to use. Battery life is sufficient to get you through the day, most days.
KILLER FEATURE: WebOS As smooth as Android and iOS without aping them Flicking the screen to kind. minimize and terminate apps Is particularly satisfying
