Review: EPSON Stylus SX425W Printer

EPSON Stylus SX425W

The Epson Stylus SX42SW(£60 inc. VAT) is a big printer with a high-gloss black finish that also incorporates a scanner and Wi-Fi into its design. It’s not the most compact of printers, but it’s certainly the most comprehensive. You’ll find a great set of controls on the top-left-hand side that also manages to cram in a color LCD screen that makes setting up the printer and print jobs a great deal easier. The design has a paper feeder in the top these can easily fold away, we prefer the look of this printer to that of the Lexmark or HP.Installing the ink cartridges and aligning paper is easy, as you simply need to follow the on-screen instructions. Even those unaccustomed to an ell-in-one printer/scanner and copier like this will soon get to grips with the basics.

You’ll need to install the supplied software and drivers before you can use the scanner or access the Wi-Fi features, but we found the software easy to use and were able to print documents just as effectively and quickly using wireless LAN as the supplied USB cable. For home use, the print quality of this machine is fairly amazing. The four color toners – black, cyan, magenta and yellow help deliver a deep and rich tone with very little in the way of banding. The scanner works exceedingly well and, while it’s not good enough for archive work, most home users will be happy with the results. As for replacement charges, black cartridges cost around £8, while individual colors cost £11 each.  If you’re regularly using all the colors, then another option is a multi-pack of all four cartridges costing around £27. The Epson Stylus SX425W is a solid all-round printer and scanner offering great print quality at a decent price.
