Samsung R780 Laptop: Specs & Review
Powerful across the board and with great list of features, this laptop has it all…
Samsung has had an excellent run of from over the past few years, producing a near-seamless range of high-quality, low priced machines that have continued to impress us. The R780 continues this great level of quality and there’s plenty to admire here.
This group test boasts real mix of design, but it’s this laptop that sticks out the most. The red and black design implemented on both the chassis and palmrest look great and the choice of color means that, unlike the Apple, dirt and dust don’t show up too obviously.
Build quality is also excellent and Samsung has taken a no-nonsense approach that makes the R780 a durable option. The widescreen 17.3-inch panel may not be as engrossing as the Acer’s but it still provides very sharp images, although the Mesh ultimately beats both when it comes to color reproduction and brightness, so is well worth a look if that’s an important consideration of you.
The Samsung’s spacious keyboard is comfortable to use at all times, although there’s a little sponginess detectable when typing. The dedicated numeric keypad will please those who regularly input daa and also left-handed gamers.
Performance-wise an Intel Core i5 processor identical to that in the Dell and Sony is used. everyday performance is almost identical to both of those laptops and there’s more than enough power here for doing everything from browsing the internet to running resource-heavy applications, such as photo editing suites.
Powerful Graphics
A particularly powerful nVidia Graphics Card has also been used here and means the R780 is just as at home running the latest games as it is editing high definition(HD) movies. Not only does does this give the laptop great versatility, but it also provides you with a great deal of future-proofing, meaning your laptop will fulfil software system requirements further into the future than the likes of the Sony.
The 500GB hard drive will let you easily store large amounts of data for the foreseeable future, including any films, music and photos you may want to travel with, while the integrated Blu-ray drives let you watch HD films in all their glory.
Considering the power on offer, this is a reasonably portable machine. The 188-minute battery life isn’t appalling, while the 2.9kg weight is actually pretty good, and we didn’t find the laptop a pain to carry around at all during the day.
All in all, the Samsung R780 is a fantastic machine. Power, portability and usability all combine to make a compelling mobile computing experience, and extras such as the Blu-ray drive are simply the icing on the cake.
