Online next-generation gaming with no console required

What is This?

OnLive is an online gaming service that ultimately aims to lets you play any game on your home computer, regardless of how powerful – or not – your home computer happens to be. In development for eight years, it was announced in 2009 at the Games Developers Conference, and launched in the US on June 17.

How does it work?

The tricks is that you don’t download the games, and you stream them. you control the action with a joypad but the games are actually being “played” miles away at OnLive HQ – only the resultant video that sent to you. As a result, theoretically, any PC that can handle streamed video can play any game. You will also be able to pause a game and then resume playing it on a different machine.

What will I need?

According to OnLive, a PC or mMac with a 1.5Mbps boardband connection for standard-def games, or 4-5Mbps for HD.A controller will be included in the monthly price of $14.95.

Games aren’t included in the price, so you’ll need to pay extra to rent or buy them. The service will lunch with a range of 16 well-known games, including Mass Effect 2 , Assassins reed 2, Metro 2033, and Prince of Persia.

OnLive also promises to be available on TV’s – no computer required – via the Microconsole adaptor at a later date.
